Augmented Museum
Brief
We were required design a museum on the bank of the Mersy in Liverpool and to pick a theme for the museum which would benefit both the from using AR and VR technologies while also considering the context that surrounded the site.
Modulus Operands
When thinking about the opportunities and uses that these technologies provide, I thought about how they are often used as a method to experience an environment not possible in our physical world. These environments are used by many as a place to escape their regular life, which led me to think about why we do this.
I found it is often used as a time for escapism ,a time of reflection and relaxation to consider things that we have experienced and learnt in everyday life, this idea led me to my self defined brief. To create a learning space which a person can relax in and interact with different stimuli of there choosing to hopefully increase the chance of them learning things from the exhibits.
Process
From my research I found that I would need to provide two spaces in the museum: one would be a more controlled library like setting which I called the solitary environment, the other was to be a more activity noisy space called the social environment.
Most museums in Liverpool had created the first spacial qualities, that I called this the solitary space. The Problem with having this calm space I found was a concept called 'museum fatigue', where over simulation of one sense and a long amount of time inside reduces the concretion time of the viewer.
My solution was to have the building on rails which would allow for the amount of time the viewer is insider would be changeable depending on the what the museum curator wanted.
For the social space I wanted to provide a environment that was like being inside the creator of the exhibit's head, where the ground floor would context to the world that the creator lived in, with the shop and cafe providing items from the time lived in.
The visitor would then ascend a triple height space which would allow the sound to travel around the space, within this space would be 'sense boxes' which would be suspended from wires and movable my crane depending on the theme.
These 'sense boxes' would provide the a way to interact with the work and the creation of the work different to purely visual.
Once on the second floor there would be a gallery of the work. To descend the visitor would come down a ramp wearing a AR headset, the ramp circulating the building descends to the first floor and provides views outwards to the city and museum park. The AR would distort the world into one the creator might see e.g. a Vincent van Gogh exhibition may enhance the colour the view may see.
Finally the park-space would provide the an area for local worker to relax while also providing a space for gamification through apps to reinforce the thing learnt in the museum.
